I had just finished an assignment and was about to leave the building when I noticed this chap. I was glad I did because it was one of the last shoots I did in New York City before moving back to the UK. And as I knew I would soon be leaving, I paused to take in the spectacular views.

Though this is not at street level, I present it here only because I happened on the scene and it gave me reason to pause and consider, as scenes on the street often do.

I came across the image in my files just the other day while searching for overlooked stock material. Images like this should be publicly available and earning.

Street Photography in Motion

This was an experimental film for me. I shot it in September 2010. What I was looking to do was package some street photography from an event in a video where the motion element served as B roll to the stills. It was a tricky shoot in that I was having to be aware of what might serve as good footage and audio, as well as being on the lookout for those arresting still images that we street photographers are constantly seeking.

This was only my third attempt as making a film having previously covered the G20 Demo and the Peace Camp in Parliament Square, again looking to concentrate mostly on stills and using video to package it all up, such that the short film would serve as an alternative delivery mechanism for my street photography.

I hope to do a lot more of this throughout 2012.

There continues to be development behind the scenes here at UKSC as we study the work of our newest photographer, Stewart in readiness for his first post. All very interesting and exciting.

Metallic Hair - Paul Treacy

Anti-Capitalist Film From 2009

There's so much discussion about the ani-capitalist movement at the moment, I thought it timely to share this 2009 film with you.

I shot this film during the G20 demo in the City of London. It's my first film and was shot with a tiny Flip Mino camera. The stills were shot on standard Nikon pro gear.

Though the fidelity of the piece is lacking somewhat, I am proud of it as a record of the day. Were I to make a similar film now, I'd shoot in hi-definition and pay particular attention to the audio capture as I have learned a lot over the last couple of years and plan to make a lot more such multimedia work in future.

Here I concentrated on the more festive aspect of the protest and was not so interested in the destructive violence. I was far more interested in the variety of characters partaking of the march.

Though I am increasingly interested in motion capture, it's the stills that motivate me most and always will. I see video as a tool to package powerful still images. The video footage informs the stills, as far as I see it.

I think this kind of filmmaking is a great way to show street photography and I hope to post more such projects here at UK Street Collective as I go along. I hope you'll continue to visit.

I'm not sure if this is a good picture or not but I love looking at it. The rotund dude was finding it difficult to get the tape to stick and his colleague was struggling to find the confidence to tell me to move on, I think. He certainly was uncomfortable with me standing close by and being curious. Instead he just turned his back and pretended I wasn't there. Or perhaps he was just embarrassed at his colleague's pathetic fumbling.

Bournemouth Street Photography Courses

This is a unique opportunity to join two experienced street photographers in a vibrant coastal resort.
Paul Russell (In-Public member) and Justin Sainsbury (UK Street Collective) will be leading engaging one-day courses around the town on 11 and 25 June 2011.

Through personal, in-the-field tuition we will encourage you to develop your own style and create interesting and inspiring street photographs.

Aspects of the day will include:

– Looking at the practical factors to consider when taking pictures of people in their environment.

– Learning to anticipate and make the most of interesting situations.

– How to best utilise your existing equipment, plus hands-on assessment of specialist cameras – the Ricoh GRD II and the Fujifilm FinePix X100.

– Maximising impact and creating rounded photo stories through selective editing.

By having a maximum of four participants we will ensure that you receive a concentrated level of advice and insight into this fascinating and challenging photography genre. The course will take place in situ on the street but we will have this beach hut base camp close to Bournemouth Pier!

For course fee of £80.00 you will also receive the benefit of a review of some of your previous work prior to the day in Bournemouth. Following the day’s shoot we will also provide an in-depth review of your pictures.

Paul and Justin are known for their humorous and poignant take on everyday life. If you enjoy non-confrontational photography of people without relying on long lenses then this may be the course for you.

The Photohumourist - Mixed Messages by PAUL TREACY

I have blogged many times about this book and it has received some additional attention but I thought it was time to feature it here on our burgeoning collective blog. I expect Justin will also feature his two books as well soon enough. And Richard is working on one as I type.

With this particular book preview I have managed to tweak the code so that it features much bigger than the standard Blurb preview. The trick is to convert the dimensions from 750x500 to 900x600. Fortunately the resolution holds.

This book has been previewed very positively in fLIP Magazine, the publication of London Independent Photography and I'm hoping to see it reviewed elsewhere as well. It's definately my best book yet and the only one available to purchase at this time. However, I'm hoping to re-issue my previous two books in new, much improved editions.

A Daughter's First Year

This is a piece of work about a personal journey I made almost 15 years ago: the first 12 months in the life of my first child Ella, and my wife Lynda’s journey from expectant to actual motherhood. But most of all for Ella, a new-born to a one year-old.

Looking back on this work now is remarkable as not only do I see my teenage daughter as a sweet infant again and how our world has moved on, but it also shows a family from a previous century.

Ella now has a brother and we are four.

We're told a million people lined the Royal wedding route yesterday. Here's my take on just a small handful of visitors enjoying the day. I was happy to work along the fringes, letting chance happenings, encounters and a little bit of instinct guide me around. Visiting a small hidden banked copse along the edge of the Mall, two pubs and the Ambassadors' chauffeur car park seemed worth-while trade-offs to the spot I'd established outside the Abbey earlier in the day.

This is my favourite of my recent meanderings. I find it quite poignant.

I'm about to head out to London Bridge and surrounds again today for a few hours. The sun's shining brightly and it's lovely and warm. I expect there'll be a lot of people about. The usual mix of Londoners and tourists. I may have some fun looking at these two very different groups and how they interact with the city itself. Tourists tend to meander the streets aimlessly and at a gentle pace which annoys the locals who pace sternly about the place at a rapid rate and with purpose, unless it's lunchtime when they too can become tourist like as they slow down for a while. And on days like today they can become quite flirtatious amongst themselves. All very amusing.

But I'm always on the lookout for a shot like the one above. An isolated individual outside of the herd for whatever reason.

Tired of working in isolation and craving community, the three of us have come together in a joint venture to collectively grow and develop our skills. We are in the earliest stages and are excited at the prospect of collaboration through editing, mentoring and group projects. We are using the Virtual Agency facility at PhotoShelter which acts as a portal to show our work and so any sales generated go directly to the photographer concerned. Though this is not a commercial venture, we do hope to sell prints through our individual archives and we will soon have a bookshop where each of our books will be available to purchase. The main focus of this endeavour is to filter only the best of our work to the surface and thereby maintain a consistently high standard of contemporary street photography. Other disciplines in which we all work will be left to our individual archives.
